FEM/FEA Specialist

Navia is looking for a

FEM/FEA Specialist

to join our Boat & Yacht Design Team

Navia Design is a leading Nordic boat and yacht design studio. We help launch, grow, and evolve progressive yards by integrating Design and Naval Architecture. The office is located in Helsinki, Finland. Navia is an official subsidiary of Aivan.

As Navia is continuing to develop the Naval Architecture team, we are looking for a FEM/FEA specialist who is passionate about boats and yachts to join our award-winning group of designers and engineers.

Job Description

As a FEM/FEA Specialist, you support the team by providing finite element analysis—primarily ply-by-ply composite calculations, including classification society compliance—while actively contributing to structural design and finalizing lamination drawings. The scope of projects ranges widely, from full-scope leisure motorboat structures to components like T-tops and transoms, as well as carbon fibre foiling passenger catamarans.

This role is tailor made based on the selected candidate. It can be purely FEM/FEA role but can also include Naval Architect or Mechanical Engineer responsibilities. This affects the skills needed and main tasks. We encourage you to apply even if not all the qualifications below match.

Main tasks & responsibilities for a FEM/FEA Specialist:

  • Verifying structural integrity and developing optimized, practical structural solutions to support the design process
  • Executing and leading FEM/FEA analysis assignments
  • Performing analytical structural calculations
  • Participating in internal meetings, presenting the results of analyses
  • Rule assessment and approval follow-up
  • Technical documentation & client communication

Skills & qualifications for a FEM/FEA Specialist:

  • Education: Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, structural engineering, naval architecture or a similar field
  • At least 3-5 years experience in structural analysis and strength calculations
  • Experience in naval architecture and mechanical engineering is considered an advantage
  • Practical and theoretical experience in lightweight structures, such as composite single-skin and sandwich structures, is highly appreciated
  • Knowledge and ability to use FEM and other analysis tools/methods to analyse high tech systems
  • Strong experience with at least one 3D CAD software; preferably Siemens NX
  • Strong experience with at least one CAE/FEA software, preferably Simcenter3D Structures / Simcenter3D Laminates Composites.
  • Technical mindset
  • Good organizational skills
  • Curiosity and capacity to learn new skills
  • Fluent English
  • Science-, theory-, and experience-based decision-making skills under pressure in time-sensitive client projects
  • Understanding the complex theory related to structural mechanics and the finite element method (FEM).
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of the team.

In case you are a Naval Architect and would like to have a combination role, these are the additional details:

Main tasks & responsibilities for a Naval Architect:

  • Performance & propulsion calculation
  • Mass estimation
  • Stability & seakeeping
  • Hull design
  • General arrangement & main drawings
  • Selection of main equipment

Skills & qualifications for a Naval Architect:

  • Good know-how of mass estimation
